  OUR STORY

‘’A job fills your pocket, but adventure fills your soul.’’

JAY

OWNER

  • What do you enjoy about running an outdoor store?

    • Well I have always been a lover of all things outside. I grew up chasing snakes, mice, squirrels, you name it! My survival skills are rooted in my military experience, I joined at 17 and since then the outdoors has been a huge part of my life. So it only seemed natural to open an outdoor store.  I am a quintessential “gear junky” and owned my first store when I Iived in Alaska.  The thing I enjoy most about the store is working with customers, helping them plan their next adventure and teaching them about the latest products and gear on the market.

  • What inspires you to get outside?

    • I love any kind of new adventure! I have done some pretty extreme climbs and hikes in my life, that being said I am no adrenaline junky, I’m about excitement, adventure and the exploration of oneself with mother nature.  I am all about safety and comfort when comes to any adventure and because of that I am very specific about the gear I use and recommend to our customers.

  • Where is your favorite travel destination?

    • Anywhere you can climb, camp or backpack and experience mountain therapy. I have been fortunate in that I’ve been able to travel to some beautiful places and through those experiences I took up climbing and backpacking.  Some favorite places include, but aren’t limited to, Germany, Switzerland, the Dolomites in Italy, the Pyrenees alps between France and Spain, and of course Alaska. The most peaceful place I’ve ever traveled to has to be Japan. I have a long bucket list of destinations that I hope to get to as well!

  • Tell us a fun fact about you.

    • I trained in martial arts in the US and it eventually led to training in Japan.

  • What is your go to piece of gear?

    • That would be a rope because it gets you places your feet can’t take you safely!

  • What made you want to open up a small outdoor store?

    • Actually, it was a dream we (Jay and I) both talked about and an extension of our lifestyle. We chose to live in Milford because we loved the area, the small town charm and being in and near nature.  We noticed Milford did not have an outdoor store that accommodated camping, hiking and climbing enthusiasts.  We love being a resource for like-minded people in the Milford community and beyond.  It is also especially satisfying when we can help people who are new to, or just getting into, outdoor sports, hobbies, adventures.

  • What inspires you to get outside?

    • When I have been inside too much! Even if I can just get a 10-minute walk with Kota I feel restored a little bit.  Other inspiration usually comes from just wanting to see and explore a new place and using it as a way to spend time with loved ones – most of my best memories come from some excursion with Jay, my family and friends. It is the best place to connect with someone!  Finally, nothing beats the health benefits of being in nature; I truly believe it is the ideal place to work the mind, body and spirit all at once.

  • Where is your favorite travel destination?

    • Well I am from New York State, and very loyal to my roots, so I have to say the Adirondacks.  However, there are many places I love, that I’d like to go back too such as Colorado, Italy, Germany, California, West Virginia, Maine, North Carolina..do you see a pattern here? Basically, I like any place where there are mountain ranges!

  • What is your favorite part about running an outdoor store?

    • I love our team!  We could not do it without their dedication and enthusiasm - they are all outdoor freaks – and I say that with love!  It really is a team effort coming up with new ideas and ways serve our customers. We have only been in business about a year so we are learning all the time.  I also love getting to try all the latest KIND Bar products YUMMY!!

  • Tell us a fun fact about you.

    • I am a quasi high-maintenance/low-maintence hybrid of a gal.  I grew up in suburbia, love NYC and ended up living in NYC for 8 years. That being said, growing up, family vacations were spent camping.  So I know how to “do without.”  I am skilled at reading both a trail map and a subway map and I can style a chic ensemble that can go from campground to cocktail party!

  • What is your go to piece of gear?

    • A tiny, tiny fanny pack that fits a phone, lip-gloss and a multi tool!

TRAILNAME: SPINELLI

  • Where is your favorite place to hike locally and why?

    • I really love the cliffs trails over 209 and The Knob. Those were the first trails I really ever started hiking back when I was a teenager. My friends and I would venture out in the middle of the night to go hang out up there and look out over the river. It connects with me on a personal level and reminds me of the good times growing up in this town.

  • Where is the most epic place you have traveled to?

    • So far, I would have to say summiting two 14ers in one summer was pretty epic. I summited Mt. Elbert in Colorado and then Mt.Whitney (the highest point in the contiguous US and the last summit of the JMT) in a few short weeks. Experiencing altitude that high for the first time was pretty damn insane.

  • Favorite pastime not related to the outdoors?

    • Night and Landscape photography are my strongest passions. I also love to create wood burning artworks and painting.

  • What is your go to piece of gear?

    • I love my Jetboil. It’s just so easy and fast to use and convenient to pack away. Plus, I have become really good at making camp coffee on that thing.

  • What’s your biggest fear when you are out on the trail?

    • Well as one of my favorite environmentalists, Yvon Chouinard, has said..”fear of the unknown is the greatest fear of all”. I believe the fear is what makes an adventure that much more adventurous. I am scared of almost everything when I am out there, but I love to push myself past the fears and keep on going. Not gonna lie though, I am definitely scared of being in the dark alone outdoors.

  • What material things do you miss most when you are on a long backpacking trip?

    • I had a lot of time to think about this question when hiking the John Muir Trail. I missed a good cup of coffee, pizza, shampoo and Spotify the most.

  • What’s on your iPod when hitting the trails?

    • Lord Huron is a must for being out there. Their music is so inspiring for getting outside. I also love blasting some Queen to help motivate me up the tough inclines. But, if I am “hate hiking” when backpacking then my main choice is Rage Against The Machine.

  • How did you get your trail name?

    • While on the JMT my friends kept saying I looked like the character “Spinelli” from the 90s cartoon Recess, so that’s just what they started calling me.
